Terekhol Fort

The Terekhol fort is located in the northern tip of Goa. It is situated on the mouth of the Terekhol River and was built by the ruler of Sawantwadi, Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle. The Terekhol fort of Goa was built during the 17th century. The Terekhol fort was given legal recognition as a part of Goa around 1788. The fort was rebuilt in 1764 by the Portuguese viceroy in India named Dom Pedro Miguel de Almeida. During the year 1825, the Terekhol fort was used as a military base for an attack on the Portuguese by Dr. Bernado Peres Da Silva. He was the first viceroy who was born in Goa itself. However his efforts were futile and the Portuguese took over the Terekhol Fort again. The fort was abandoned however, once the Portuguese left. The fort is now in ruins though a part of it has been converted into a heritage hotel.

The fort also houses a church inside its premises which is known as the St. Anthony church. The church is usually not open for public to visit. However, during certain occasions like its annual feast, the church is open for the public as well. The annual feast of the St. Anthony church takes place during the month of May. The Terekhol fort stands strong till date and makes an interesting testimony of history.

Many people who come to the beaches visit the Chapora fort just to feel that mystical air and view the sea from the ramparts of the fort. The walls are still strong and have withstood the lashes of time for many years. St. Paul Church

The St. Paul Church is a ruined church that is a popular tourist attraction in Goa. It is located on the road that one takes from Old Goa to reach Ponda. Around the year 1560, this building was pulled down and the foundation was laid for a bigger church. However, there was stringent opposition from Augustinians and Nuns of Santa Monica. In fact, the building was set afire at least four times by some enemies of Jesuits between 1591 and 1675. The church also had mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier that were preserved in a silver casket, which was later shifted to Basilica of Bom Jesus. In the year 1829, the government decided to demolish it properly since it was already in a dilapidated state. The archway and some part of the front entrance still remains on the road that leads to Ponda from Old Goa.

In 1521, the church was consecrated to the Holy Spirit but was demolished after some time. The church that is present here today was built in 1661. The entrance hall of the earlier church remained as it is. When the new church was built, there was also an educational institution within the church. However the institution was closed down by the Portuguese government sometime around 1835. In 1964, the Indian government converted the St. Francis of Assisi Church into a museum. Ancient relics and old paintings are now displayed here.

The design and construction of the church is very intricate and much attention has been given to the details. Though in size, it is much smaller than Se Cathedral and the Basilica of Bom Jesus, the carvings and decoration is as striking as in those churches. The church is painted generously and the altars are carved beautifully. The interiors of the church are decorated with depictions from the Bible whereas the walls are carved with floral designs. The paintings in the church have a very distinctive Indian feel. There is a statue of St. Michael right at the entrance of the church. The congregation hall is heavily decorated with carvings and one finds two large statues of Jesus Christ and St. Francis of Assisi.

The church of St. Anne of Goa is noted for its remarkable architecture in India. The present day church was reconstructed by Mons Francisco do Rego with his own money. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, he could not complete the construction and Father Antonio Francisco da Cunha was bestowed with the responsibility of completing the construction of the church. The church was finally completed in 1965. The story as to how the church got the name of Saint Anne is very interesting.

The villagers who were living in Talaulim in Goa in the year 1577 purchased a plot of land on which a small monastery was to be built to ease the process of conversion. Though the monastery was constructed, it was not dedicated to any saint. One day a man reported an incident in which he had a vision of a woman walking down the hill with a cane and a hat and claimed that the monastery was her abode. At the same time, a Brahmin woman claimed that a similar woman had held her hand in her dream when she was very sick thus miraculously curing her. The woman had told her that her name was Anna and she wanted to reside in the monastery.

The Brahmin lady graciously converted to Christianity following the miraculous cure. The whole village was stunned and the priest decided to sanctify the church in the name of St. Anne. This is how the church came to be known as the Saint Anne church. Every year, the feast of St. Anne is celebrated throughout Goa on July 26th. In Talaulim it is celebrated with much more fun and enthusiasm and is known as Cucumber Feast. Though introduced by the Portuguese, the Goans modified the celebrations in their own style without changing the dates.

This was claimed to be a miracle and his body was preserved in an air tight coffin made of glass and placed inside a silver casket. Every year thousands of devotees visit the Basilica of Bom Jesus on 2nd December to see the mortal remains of the saint that is displayed publicly.
